Chapter 8

Ponzio

Gregario was seated beside me, his hands gripping the steering wheel. His knuckles were white and I could almost smell the tension in the air. After all, he never thought that his plans were going to change this much, and he knew why things were happening this way.

“This shouldn’t have to be happening this way, but of course you had to take a liking to her. And here I thought you were more reliable.”

There was no point in hiding the truth anymore. I had to argue using a different approach.

“It will never happen again and, either way, we are going to keep her as our hostage.”

“And nothing more than that? I don’t think I can trust you fully anymore.”

"Nothing more than that. I don’t really want to do anything with her other than fucking her."

“Right,” Gregario said through gritted teeth. “I’m not going to let you watch over her, if that’s what you’re hoping this will be for. I’m going to be the one caring for her.”

I widened my eyes.

“That’s not what you promised! You’re locking me out of what you said I needed to do?!”

“I’m choosing what’s best for our cause. Did you already forget that we were supposed to kill the Ilins to avenge our father?”

I turned my head to him, looking wide-eyed. I couldn’t believe the sort of thing that he had just told me. He promised me that he was going to let me take care of her.

I shook my head and decided not to continue my arguments on the issue. There was no point in doing that. I mean, what was I hoping I was going to accomplish? It wasn’t like he was a man that usually tried to listen to my reasons for anything.

He opened the door of the car and stepped out. He didn’t pull out his gun but he did turn his head to me, looking at me with a confident expression on his face.

I knew that, and at that moment, he was certain that his plan was going to work. After all, he planned the whole thing from start to finish, scrutinizing every little detail.

I walked with him to the church. There were Ilin's men patrolling everything, including every building in the vicinity. I didn’t know if we had much of a chance to go in there without causing a ruckus that would be in the news, but I was also aware that we didn’t have much of a choice.

It was either this or retrying some other time in the future, and I didn’t want to let anything to chance. That was not my style.

We were walking to the front of the church when an explosion started to shake the ground. The first thing I did was to shoot my hand to my handgun, pulling it out while I hoped we hadn't overlooked anything.

But there were so many people screaming and running around that they didn’t have much of a choice. They first had to make sure that Roman and Sergei were going to survive whatever they thought was happening.
